Comprehensive Kinetic, Isotherm and Thermodynamic Analysis of an Adsorption System in Aqueous Media

Abstract : The present study relates the potentialities of date pedicel powder to eliminate methylene blue ions in aqueous solutions. Variations in pH, initial adsorbate concentration, temperature and contact time and their effects onto adsorption capacity are studied experimentally. The variation of the pH in the range of 3 to 10 has a remarkable effect on adsorption of methylene blue onto the powder of date pedicels; the best adsorption is obtained at neutral pH. Adsorption is optimal at an initial methylene blue concentration of 45 mg.L -1 at a dose of 0.2 gL -1 of the adsorbent, and at a maximum contact time of 60 min. The results of the study are exploited using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations. It was found that the adsorption follows the Freundlich isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters obtained show that the adsorption is favourable, spontaneous and endothermic. The interaction of date pedicels powder with methylene blue ions is rapid and its kinetics follows the second-degree Lagergren equation. This study confirms that date pedicels powder has a high adsorption potential, making it an effective means for the removal of dyes from aqueous solutions.
